On Saturday (June 29), the Indian team clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 title by defeating South Africa by 7 runs in the final held in Barbados. Following this victory, Virat Kohli—known as the run machine of Team India—shocked fans by announcing his retirement from T20 internationals. After the match, he said that this was his last T20 match for India.

After the match, Kohli said, ‘This was my last T20 World Cup, and we wanted to win it. I feel this is the right time to retire, and now it’s time for the next generation to carry this legacy forward. It was an open secret. This was Rohit’s 9th World Cup and my 6th T20 World Cup. I hadn’t been performing well in the last few matches. Right now, I can’t even express what I’m feeling inside.’

In the T20 World Cup 2024 final, Kohli delivered a magnificent innings for India. Opening the batting with captain Rohit Sharma, he held firm until the 19th over. He scored 76 runs off 59 balls, hitting two sixes and six fours. Notably, Kohli had been quiet with the bat throughout the tournament, but the way he rose to the occasion in the final was truly remarkable. A day before the match, Rohit Sharma had said that Kohli was saving his form for the final—and that proved to be true.
